ArchServer Project Wiki

I'm going to fall back to my fire brigade ways and create this page in the form of a SMEACS briefing - Situation, Mission, Execution, Administration, Communications and Safety :)

Quick Start

Situation

Arch Linux is a Linux distribution gaining in popularity due to it's KISS (Keep It Simple) philosophy, speed and rolling-release update methods. It has become a popular desktop distribution among users who are willing to devote time to configuring and maintaining their computer system.

The KISS philosophy and speed make Arch Linux ideal for use in server environments, however the rolling-release system make it potentially unstable meaning administrators often have to spend more time maintaining the system during upgrade cycles compared to other distributions which do not use the rolling-release update model (such as Debian, RedHat or CentOS).

Mission

  • Utilize the solid grounding of Arch Linux as a base for a more stable set of packages aimed at server installation.
  • Maintain the KISS philosophy of Arch Linux.
  • Create a release-based style of update system for Arch Linux.
  • Ensure sane and secure 'out of box' settings; See Security page.
  • Keep upstream code as verbatim as possible, except in the interest of:
    • Backporting security patches.
    • Packaging changes to increase the 'out of box' security.

Execution

  • Packages - what we should be including as part of ArchServer.
  • Roadmap - milestones along the way.
  • Releases - how we want to model our release methodology.
  • To Do List - see if there's something on the list you can help us with! :)

Administration

  • A website, wiki and bug tracker are already up and running.
  • More volunteers are needed -- add you details to the Signup page if you're interested and willing. We are in particular need of:
    • Packagers
    • Coders to backport security patches
    • Documentation Writer(s)
  • Packaging Guidelines
  • Mirror Requirements
  • The official name is "ArchServer" (without a space).
  • Create Trusted User Checklist
  • Forum Rules

Communications

Bug Tracker, Wiki and Forums are up and running. Direct e-mails can be used where appropriate. Mailing Lists are also up and running: [[1]]

You can also join us on IRC. Join #ArchServer on the Freenode network.

Community Meeting

We should arrange a meeting to be held at some stage to discuss some issues once we can get a suitably full Meeting Agenda.

Safety

Kind of irrelevant to an online project. Don't electrocute yourself while plugging in your new server, and use an anti-static strap ;)
